University of Puget Sound Campus Development Plan
Tacoma, Washington
Like many private liberal arts institutions across the country, the University of Puget Sound has been planning for a distinct academic future with transformative pedagogy. The new Campus Development Plan (CDP) focuses on face-to-face learning with a strong commitment to enhancing the student experience. Additionally, the university prioritized giving voice to underserved populations and supporting its campus carbon neutrality plan.
NAC met in person with over 50 university departments and more than 20 student affinity groups. Conversations with students specifically examined issues of belonging and inclusion.
The final CDP focuses on improving existing campus facilities more than significant growth and addressing evolving academic, residential, and community space needs. This includes an emphasis on recruitment, retention, and revenue while enhancing student services and campus community engagement. One important move was the relocation of the Center for Inclusive Excellence to a central, historic and symbolic campus location. Immediate outcomes with which we remain engaged include a consolidated Student Success Center, residence hall upgrades that improve community and campus activation, as well as the design for a new conference center.
